Perched on the edge of a private peninsula, the Aegean Sea gently swirls around the Waterfront Villa on three sides. This uniquely positioned Villa, which is designed to function as both a comfortable family home and an elegant social space for entertaining, also features a long, picturesque dock extending into the magnificent blue sea.

Quark’s design for this extraordinary Waterfront Villa is a contemporary iteration of the timeless aesthetic of chiaroscuro or the timeless play of light and shadow. Approaching from either side of Bodrum’s breathtaking coastline, visitors’ first glimpses of sunlight Villa are but flashes of light glinting off the Villa’s many reflective surfaces, resembling an emerald nestled into natural rock formations. Striking contrasts between sparkling white walls and shining black stones are moderated by the Villa’s light grey marble floors.

For Quark, a welcome design challenge for this project was presented by the Villa’s unique seaside location. Our team sought to take advantage of the site’s geographic idiosyncrasies while creating an exceptionally safe, stable and sustainable residence to be enjoyed by the current owners and generations yet to come. Careful estimates of seasonal wave heights, dynamic weather conditions and climate-related changes in sea level combined with the selection of durable materials, such as Sika concrete, capable of resisting high salinity conditions were chosen to ensure both the security and longevity of the construction.

The truly awesome–awe-inspiring–Aegean setting for the Waterfront Villa made the integration of the domestic and natural environments an unquestionably key design priority for Quark’s team. To this end, the dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows along the entirety of the villa’s expansive terrace were implemented in order to create aesthetic, spatial and atmospheric continuity between the home’s indoor and outdoor spaces. The “challenge” of this exposed and heavily sloped peninsula was, to Quark at least, an unmatched opportunity for leveraging sustainable design principles into an impervious family residence.
