Oborishite Apartment
Sofia, BG
Within the dense, layered urban fabric of Sofia, the Oborishite Apartment project represents a focused intervention into the interior architecture of two distinct residential units within an existing multi-story building. Spanning a combined area of 290 square meters, the intervention focuses on a systematic re-articulation of contemporary living spaces, prioritizing spatial clarity and material precision.
The commission, initiated by a private client, sought to modernize the living experience, emphasizing the integration of natural light and the creation of fluid, interconnected spaces. The project’s intent is to refine the existing spatial organization, prioritizing a seamless flow between functional zones and establishing a cohesive, luminous interior environment.
The core design strategy revolves around the reorganization of existing floor plans to enhance spatial fluidity. Each residential unit is designed to accommodate modern living patterns and is structured around a program of two bedrooms, a consolidated living and dining area, and an open-plan kitchen. The architectural intent is to minimize spatial barriers, fostering a seamless transition between functional zones. This is achieved through the careful placement of partitions and the strategic alignment of circulation paths, resulting in an environment that promotes ease of movement and visual continuity.
At the heart of each Oborishite unit, each space is conceived as a dynamic, interconnected design, departing from rigid compartmentalization in favour of contemporary open-plan principles that intersect with subtle neoclassic undertones.
Rather than a rigid adherence to historical precedent, the design employs a strategy of suggestion, subtly referencing classical proportions and symmetries within a decidedly modern framework. This is achieved through the careful articulation of spatial volumes, the strategic placement of furniture, and the integration of architectural details that hint at a formal elegance without resorting to overt historical mimicry. This delicate balance between tradition and modernity creates a living environment that is both sophisticated and inherently livable, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of classic spatial ideals.
The project’s material palette is characterized by a deliberate selection of finishes that establish a nuanced dialogue between texture and tone with the intention of reinforcing the project’s overarching design intent.
Grey oak parquet flooring establishes a warm and continuous surface, while Statuario white marble is employed as a counterpoint for select surfaces, introducing a sense of refined and enduring elegance. The strategic use of polished bronze accents adds a subtle layer of warmth and sophistication to the detailing. Matte walnut, finished with a pale light grey varnish, is utilized for cabinetry, contributing to a refined and understated aesthetic. The introduction of red and blue dining chairs provides subtle yet impactful colour accents, adding a layer of visual interest to the dining areas. The interplay of these materials creates a rich, layered environment that balances visual interest with a sense of calm.
Lighting is approached as an integral component of the architectural design, and the spatial configuration prioritizes the optimization of natural light penetration, establishing a design strategy that leverages a neutral tonal range. This approach was anchored by warm light white wall surfaces, which further fostered a sense of spatial continuity and luminosity. The intent is to create an environment where functional zones are seamlessly integrated, promoting a cohesive and expansive interior experience.
Natural light is maximized through the strategic placement of large windows, which serve as primary sources of illumination. The integration of a Baccarat crystal chandelier in the main living area serves as a focal point, its intricate form casting dynamic shadows that enhance the spatial perception. Accent lighting is strategically deployed to highlight key architectural features and create a sense of depth and dimension. The careful calibration of light and shadow reinforces the project’s spatial clarity and enhances the overall atmospheric quality.
The Oborishite Apartment project transcends a mere design intervention, emerging as a carefully orchestrated narrative of interior space. By prioritizing the interplay of light, material, and spatial fluidity, the architects have crafted environments that resonate with both contemporary sensibilities and a sense of enduring quality. This intervention demonstrates an approach focused on transforming existing spaces through a balance of aesthetic considerations and functional requirements, resulting in spaces intended to be both visually compelling and eminently livable.
The project ultimately aims to affirm how a deep understanding of materials, light, and space can be orchestrated to create environments that resonate with both elegance and practicality, offering a subtle yet profound enhancement to the residents’ daily experience.
