Awani U-Walk Restaurant

Jeddah, KSA

Emerging as a contemporary culinary destination within the bustling U-Walk complex in Jeddah, the Awani Restaurant offers a refreshing counterpoint to its urban surroundings. Spanning 1,045 square meters, this two-story culinary destination orchestrates a diverse array of dining experiences that engages the senses through a carefully orchestrated interplay of natural materials, dynamic spatial arrangements, and the subtle integration of verdant life. Catering to both intimate gatherings and larger groups, the design narrative centres on adaptability, sensory engagement, and the deliberate integration of nature within a challenging climate.

The Awani U-Walk Restaurant in Jeddah distinguishes itself through a considered approach to spatial organisation, prioritising flexibility and adaptability in its seating arrangements. Recognising the diverse needs of its clientele, the design incorporates a rich variety of seating typologies.

Clusters of intimate two-person settings provide flexibility for smaller parties, while adaptable modular tables for mid-sized groups and extended configurations capable of accommodating families and groups and other larger gatherings. Banquette seating lines the walls, maximising space efficiency and offering comfortable, continuous seating, fostering a dynamic and inclusive dining environment.

The balcony level further expands these options with more intimate settings overlooking the activity below. This strategic distribution ensures the restaurant can comfortably host a range of occasions, from casual encounters to celebratory feasts, without compromising the spatial flow or the individual dining experience.

In the arid climate of Jeddah, the incorporation of greenery within the Awani U-Walk Restaurant is more than an aesthetic choice; it’s a deliberate strategy to introduce a sense of freshness and vitality. Lush plantings are integrated throughout the design as integral components of the spatial experience, providing a visual cooling effect, softening the built environment and creating pockets of natural respite.

Vertical green walls soften hard surfaces, while potted plants and integrated greenery within seating alcoves create pockets of greenery act as a visual anchor, connecting the interior spaces to the natural world and fostering a more tranquil atmosphere. This infusion of living elements offers a welcome contrast to the urban environment, contributing to a cooler microclimate within the restaurant’s footprint and enhancing the overall well-being of its patrons through a more biophilic connection, enhancing the overall sensory experience.

The foundational colour palette of the restaurant draws inspiration from the hues of the surrounding landscape, with a warm sandstone beige dominating walls and ceilings. This earthy tone provides a neutral and grounding backdrop against which carefully curated pops of colour are introduced. Vibrant fabrics upholster seating, adding tactile richness and visual interest. Similarly, pendant lampshades introduce focused bursts of colour, drawing the eye and defining intimate zones. This restrained yet deliberate use of colour, anchored by the natural tones, creates a harmonious and inviting atmosphere.

The integration of lush greenery within seating alcoves further enlivens the palette, creating moments of unexpected vibrancy against the muted base. This balanced approach ensures a sophisticated yet engaging visual experience.

Visual interest and a tangible sense of depth are meticulously woven into the design through a rich interplay of textures. The smooth expanse of the neocement flooring provides a grounding element, contrasting with the tactile complexity of woven fabrics and the artisanal quality of handmade ceramic wall tiles. Travertine marble surfaces on countertops and tables introduce a cool, natural grain. This deliberate juxtaposition of smooth and rough, natural and crafted surfaces engages the senses, adding layers of complexity and preventing the space from feeling monolithic. The interplay of these textures contributes significantly to the overall sensory richness and architectural narrative of the restaurant, adding visual complexity and inviting a more profound sensory interaction with the space.

Recognising the appeal of al fresco dining, Awani U-Walk boasts ample external seating areas, thoughtfully equipped to ensure comfort even under the Jeddah sun. A generous array of umbrellas provides essential shade, transforming the terrace into an enjoyable open-air extension of the restaurant throughout the day.

The strategic placement of abundant planting around the external seating area contributes to mitigating the heat and creating a cooler and more inviting atmosphere, further enhancing this outdoor experience. This dedication to creating a comfortable and verdant external space extends the dining options and allows guests to enjoy the outdoor atmosphere, enhancing the restaurant’s appeal and expanding its capacity.

Awani U-Walk Restaurant stands as a testament to a design approach that carefully considers the multifaceted dining experience. The thoughtful articulation of space, the considered selection of materials and textures, the deliberate integration of greenery as a vital element, and the grounding base palette punctuated by vibrant accents converge to create an environment that is both aesthetically engaging and functionally sophisticated.

This new culinary destination offers a compelling addition to Jeddah’s urban fabric, balancing functionality with sensory appeal, inviting patrons to linger and engage with a space conceived to enhance the communal dining experience.
