HG Holding Administration Building

Kahramanmaraş, TR

Challenging the often-sterile perception of institutional architecture, the HG Holding Administration Building in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, presents a compelling case for warmth and human connection within a functional framework. Spanning 1,790 square meters across four levels, the design consciously moves beyond conventional office aesthetics, aiming to create a welcoming and productive environment for staff and visitors. This emphasis on a comfortable and engaging atmosphere permeates the architectural decisions, shaping everything from spatial organisation to the nuanced selection of materials.

The design programme unfolds through a deliberate organization of its internal functions, carefully considering the flow of users and the specific needs of each zone. This strategic distribution of programs across the building’s four levels is not just about compartmentalization; rather, it’s a considered hierarchy of spaces designed to enhance operational efficiency while subtly influencing the user’s journey and perception of the environment.

The subterranean levels are strategically utilized to support the primary functions above. The B2 basement houses dedicated conference halls, providing essential spaces for meetings and collaborative activities, while the B1 level serves as a crucial logistical backbone, accommodating storage for the ground-floor pharmacy operations. This separation ensures efficient flow and minimizes disruption within the public and administrative areas. The ground floor acts as a vital interface with the community, seamlessly integrating the main entrance with accessible pharmacy spaces. Above, the first floor provides a dedicated realm for administrative offices, fostering a focused and collaborative work environment.

This considered zoning not only optimizes functionality and internal flow but also contributes significantly to the overall user experience, ensuring intuitive navigation and a sense of order within the diverse activities housed within the building’s envelope.

Central to the building’s welcoming character is its carefully curated material palette. Eschewing the often-clinical palette of institutional spaces, the design embraces a range of textures and tones carefully chosen to engage the senses and promote a feeling of well-being.

Within the administrative offices, the subtle variation in grey carpet tones serves not only to delineate individual workspaces within the open plan but also introduces a tactile softness underfoot, contributing to a more comfortable and less sterile environment for daily tasks.

Conversely, the vibrant, patterned carpet in the conference halls injects a sense of energy and dynamism, visually distinguishing this space and fostering a more engaging atmosphere for collaborative events.

The juxtaposition of Statuario white marble, used for wall cladding, with the grounding presence of dark grey marble flooring creates a balance between refinement and stability. The reflective qualities of the white marble enhance natural light diffusion, contributing to a brighter and more airy feel, while the darker flooring provides a sense of solidity. Introducing a layer of tactile warmth, the light beige wall cladding offers a softer visual and physical texture, contrasting with the harder surfaces. This is further enhanced by the integration of natural oak with a light brown varnish in architectural elements, bringing the inherent warmth and organic quality of wood into the interior.

Finally, the strategic deployment of brownish-orange and olive green accents in furniture and solid surfaces provides visual anchors and moments of subtle vibrancy, preventing the space from feeling monotonous and contributing to a more engaging and human-scaled environment. This considered material strategy underscores the design’s commitment to creating spaces that are not only functional but also contribute positively to the sensory and emotional experience of their users.

The architectural form of the HG Holding Administration Building embodies a contemporary sensibility, characterized by a considered dialogue between clean, straight lines and gentle curves. This interplay is evident in both the overall massing and the internal spatial arrangements.

Within the administrative offices, an open-plan layout organized around a clear grid system promotes efficiency and visual connectivity. The reception area functions as a transitional space, featuring a sleek reception desk set against a calming blue backdrop, offering a serene point of arrival. This deliberate combination of structured organization and softer forms contributes to an environment that feels both functional and inviting.

The design of the HG Holding Administration Building embraces a growing understanding of the profound impact of the built environment on human well-being, particularly within healthcare-adjacent spaces.

Moving beyond purely functional considerations, the architectural approach actively integrates principles of user-centred design. The conscious departure from stark, clinical aesthetics acknowledges the psychological effects of such environments, often associated with anxiety and detachment. Instead, the emphasis on warmer tones and natural materials directly references theories in colour psychology, where earthier hues and the introduction of natural elements are linked to feelings of comfort, security, and reduced stress. While direct access to extensive biophilic elements might be limited within this administrative context, the incorporation of natural oak textures and the carefully considered colour palette serve as subtle nods to biophilic design principles, aiming to foster a connection with nature and promote a sense of calm.

This design framework recognizes that the experience of a building extends beyond its physical utility, actively shaping the emotional and psychological state of its users, and ultimately contributing to a more positive and supportive environment.
