Villa On The Cliffs

Sardinia, IT

Sardinia Villa is securely perched on the edge of a dramatic cliff in Italy overlooking the crystalline Mediterranean Sea. One of Quark’s most widely acclaimed projects, Sardinia Villa’s simple, window-filled façade blends seamlessly with the surrounding rocky landscape and provides a uniquely unmediated sensory experience of the Mediterranean’s seasonal tidal cycles from crashing waves to smooth-as-glass seas. Moreover, this stunning two-level villa was carefully engineered to work alongside natural climatic patterns to minimize energy consumption while efficiently maintaining comfortable temperatures indoors.

Sardinia Villa features an open floor plan with a comfortable lounge, stately dining room, and two spacious bedrooms—both of which feature unparalleled panoramic views of the Mediterranean. Floor-to-ceiling windows and doors in the Villa’s common spaces open onto a deck comfortably and durably furnished for lounging and leisure activities. The living room concentrates the warmth and energy of daylight into the heart of the Villa and connects the interior to the roof terrace with its unencumbered, panoramic views of the sea. Complementarily, the Villa’s bedrooms draw on explicitly Italian elements, especially minimalist luxury furniture, to anchor these sequestered spaces in a deep sense of tranquility, comfort and repose.

For this project, Quark Studio privileged the use of local materials to support aesthetic and design connections between the construction and its pristine natural context. The Villa’s minimalist interior features Mediterranean-style decorations, a fireplace, and an English chestnut wood floor, the combination of which facilitates the flexible rearrangement of cozy, semi-private niches within the larger open floor plan. In particular, Quark’s creative of exposed concrete and smooth plaster surfaces in this project fosters a deep sense of stability and comfort from within the Villa, providing a soothing vantage point from which to enjoy the dynamic pastiche of natural textures and colors so dramatically on display in the Mediterranean Sea below.
